The Al-Noor school is a private K-12 Islamic school based in Park Slope in Brooklyn. Their debate team, founded in 2009, has been on an excelling streak for the past decade. What had started off as 4 students, transformed into 40 as of 2015. Not only notorious of holding students who have excelled in the states championships, but they have had successive years of all their students with winning streaks, and it was all student-run. This year, they have expanded their team to their middle school students, giving the youth the opportunity to voice themselves as well. Here, we have the students who have been there since this great magnification and revolutionized the voice of Muslims since then.

Boost Recruitment, Retention and Rigor: Evidence Based Argumentation in the Classroom
NYCUDL couldn’t agree more with University of Chicago’s George Hillocks who claimed, “Argument is at the very heart of critical thinking…what a student needs to know for success in college.”
Learn how NYCUDL supports Evidence-Based Argumentation (EBA)  across the curriculum, and how EBA supports YOU.  It’s not just about class debates and thesis projects anymore.  Schools use argument analysis of data sets and texts daily, reporting ratings rises for their Quality Reviews and for the debate club’s popularity.
Collect task ideas to convey: how persuasion differs from argumentation (use posters), how to infer impact (dueling statistics pair shares), how claims and counterclaims interplay (multi-role play quick clashes), all using easy-to-prep, discipline-specific literacy (which also happen to be relevant as national debate topics).

Let’s Talk about Race, Ethnicity and Debate
As coaches, we address challenging topics when we research, study and practice with our debaters. Race and ethnicity are embedded in daily discourse and play significant roles in how we interpret inequality, discrimination and implicit bias within our society. The Let’s talk about Race, Ethnicity and Debate workshop will give us the opportunity to use Critical Race Theory (CRT), cultural awareness and positionality to unpack how we understand, embrace and teach race and ethnicity in our debate environments. We will discuss NYCUDL Parliamentary topics, participate in interactive activities and critically examine the dangers of a single story and the power of diverse narratives. Everyone is welcome to learn and exchange methods that assist in addressing racial diversity in debate!

Tips and Techniques on Judging Debates
Megan is a 2018-2019 Member of the AmeriCorps through the NYC Civic Corps. Originally from Las Vegas, NV, she moved to New York to attend St. John’s University in 2014, where she studied philosophy and computer science (she believes that most people in tech should study ethics a little more closely). At St. John’s, she joined debate, going on to compete in tournaments around the country, teach during the summer, and now work with the NYC Urban Debate League. She considers joining her university’s debate society one of the best decisions she’s ever made. When she’s not overworking herself, she enjoys sleeping and cooking.
